How to take pre-orders without spreadsheets

Spreadsheets work for a while. Then they don't. Here is what changes when you stop tracking pre-orders manually.

The spreadsheet that quietly runs your business

Most home-based businesses start the same way. You make something. Someone wants it. You write their name down somewhere. Pickup date, what they ordered, whether they've paid.

That somewhere is usually a spreadsheet. It works. Until you've got fifteen orders in a week, and three different colours of highlighting, and you've started a second tab for follow-ups, and you can't remember if Sarah said Saturday morning or afternoon.

The spreadsheet was a temporary fix. You just didn't know.

What stops working first

The first thing to break is reminders. You forget to send one, the customer forgets to collect, the order sits ready and no one comes. Awkward to manage. Hard to charge for.

The second is double bookings. Two people ask for the same Saturday slot, you say yes to both, you don't realise until the morning. One of them goes home unhappy.

The third is payment. Someone says they'll pay on collection. They forget cash. You feel weird asking. Eventually you stop chasing.

None of these problems are dramatic on their own. They're small admin failures that accumulate.

What a real system gives you

A proper pre-order system does four things. It shows the customer which dates and slots are available. It takes their order and their payment in the same step. It sends them a confirmation. It reminds them the day before pickup.

That's it. Nothing fancy. No app for them to download. No login. Just a link, a clear flow, and a confirmation that lands in their inbox.

Once that's in place, the spreadsheet stops being load-bearing. The system holds the business, not your memory.

Why it matters more than it seems

The thing that wears people down in a small home business isn't the making. It's the holding. Holding the orders in your head, holding the dates, holding who's paid and who hasn't.

Picklo was built to take that off you. One link to share. Orders, payments, reminders, calendar. Less admin, more time on the part you actually love.
